
Popping a daily multivitamin (or a handful of assorted vitamins) is a common morning ritual for many Americans—as well established for some as their morning coffee and news. It is a good health habit, after all—but there can be risks. Vitamins taken in moderation that contribute to healthy, balanced levels of these essential nutrients in the body are in fact healthy—but anything taken in excess can actually be harmful and cause unwanted side effects and risks. A nationwide study by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) that measured vitamin A levels in men and women found a commonality of excess vitamin A levels in men over 30 and women over 50. Those study participants and others with excess levels of vitamin A may face side effects like dizziness, nausea, headaches, and joint pain.
