The worst thing about incurable diseases is, of course, that they have no known cure. But the term “incurable” is often misleading, and can cause people to give up hope rather than take much-needed steps to lessen the impact of the disease. The fact is, many incurable diseases are still completely manageable and treatable, some without tremendous effort or cost. This is the case with age-related macular degeneration. Although there is no known cure, there are many factors that can help prevent or slow the progression of the disease. The thought of one’s vision gradually worsening with age can be overwhelming, but through a combination of vitamin and mineral supplements, healthy lifestyle choices including diet and regular exercise, and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, it may be entirely possible to treat age-related macular degeneration aggressively enough to sustain healthy vision for many years to come.
