Flibanserin, an antidepressant, has been approved for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) for women. Like other anti-depressants, it has side effects like low blood pressure and fainting. These side effects are increased when women drink alcohol or take other medications such as fluconazole (a common use medication). Flibanserin works by affecting neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.
A common cause for the decrease in sex drive as women age is a decrease in testosterone levels. In women, bioidentical testosterone is a great way to improve decreased sex drive with less risky side effects and more benefits. Bioidentical testosterone pellets not only improve sexual desire and orgasm, but increases energy, drive, focus, mood, decrease hot flashes, vaginal dryness, help memory, protect bones, muscle, and improve skin quality. They have also be used safely in women who have had breast cancer.
There is also a psychological component to sex drive in women and this too needs to be addressed. All the medication in the world is not going to improve your sex drive if you are tired, stressed, or have unresolved issues with your partner.
