
Our history is littered with out-of-control infectious diseases that mushroomed into full-blown epidemics―influenza, smallpox, polio, etc. And now it’s happened again. But this time it’s obesity―a noncommunicable disease. A report that was issued in October 2017 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) pegged the nation’s obesity and overweight rate at 70.7 percent of the population. That’s the highest rate ever, and, despite hope that the trend would reverse, it’s continuing its upward climb. The American diet has continually become less healthy, with far too much sugar, too many refined carbs, and too much processed food. People sit too much and move too little. No doubt these unhealthy habits contribute to weight gain. But there’s another important factor that’s too often overlooked. Out-of-balance hormones, which occur frequently in mid-life, can pile on excess body fat and undermine all attempts to lose weight. If not addressed, weight loss may prove near impossible. Read more…
